Allegedly Is the True Crime Show Netflix Buried and Shouldn’t Have

It landed on Netflix on April 29th with essentially no fanfare, tucked into the platform’s new podcast shelf somewhere between a comedy interview show and a puzzle programme. That’s a strange home for Ellison Barber, who has spent roughly 150 days reporting from Ukraine and was the only US correspondent anchoring live from the Israel-Gaza border at the start of the 2023 war. She also reported from the Venezuela-Colombia border as gunfire broke out at the Simón Bolívar International Bridge. She is not a person who should be treated as ambient noise.

Allegedly is a weekly video podcast, each episode roughly forty minutes, in which Barber sits in what looks like a well-lit den and works through a true crime case in conversation with a legal analyst, an expert, or someone central to the story. The format is designed to pair reporting with conversation rather than narration, and it works because Barber is a genuinely skilled interviewer: she listens, she follows threads, she doesn’t perform surprise she doesn’t feel.

The first episode covers new developments in the Gabby Petito case, with NBC legal analyst Misty Marris. The second unpacks the Alexander Brothers investigation. What the series does that most true crime content doesn’t is contextualise: you’re not just getting the facts arranged for maximum tension. You’re getting the legal scaffolding, the forensic process, the institutional failure or success that surrounds each case. Barber’s background in conflict reporting gives her a different relationship to chaos and consequence than most hosts in this genre. She’s seen things that were not constructed for an audience.

That history matters. There’s something in how she approaches these cases, a seriousness that doesn’t tip into grimness, that reads as earned rather than performed. What she built covering war zones and breaking news transfers directly to a studio conversation about evidence and motive. The show deserves more visibility than it received.
